Handmade natural hemp shopper bag.
The Hemp Natural Shopper Bag by Hemper is handmade in Nepal, by communities and artisans at risk of social exclusion. Hemper uses hemp as raw material for all their products. Hemp is one of the most sustainable fibers on the planet. This Maxi Bag’s natural colour comes from a natural dye technique, where fruits, peels, minerals, roots and plants are arranged in large pots. Craftswomen submerge pieces of fabric in the pots, that rest on a low heat and begin to absorb the dyes.
This Maxi shopper bag has handles that were made using a traditional Pokhara technique. The eco bag has a magnet closure. It has two internal pockets. The hand-drawn logo design is inspired by traditional graphic elements of the Nepali stationery.

How product is made
The entire Hemper production process is done using traditional textile techniques and materials from Nepal. The process begins in the mountains of the of the western villages of Nepal, where hemp has been handled for centuries. In these villages, rural families grow and harvest it. Then, it is boiled in order to obtain the inner fibers that are later attached to each other forming the yarn. The yarn is taken to Kathmandu, more in particular to a community of low-income families located in the neighborhood of Budhanilkantha. In these families, women are in charge of washing the yarn and get it prepared for crafting. When it is ready, using a traditional loom, the yarn is interlaced forming the fabrics. Later on, the process continues in Budhanilkantha, where tailors craft the final backpack. The main core where our backpack production takes place is in a community located in the neighborhood of Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu. This is the place where some of the workers live and most of them work. Recycled rice bags is used for the inner protection, that also shape and contribute to the durability and resistance of the bag. Hemp is one of the less polluting natural fibres, that is why focus on a product that contains a high percentage of this fibre. It does not need neither herbicides nor pesticides since it does not suffer from pest problems. Only 200-500 litres of water are used to produce 1kg of dried hemp. On the other hand, 10 times more is needed to produce 1kg of cotton. It is the plant with the most O2 regeneration power.
