How do we make an impact?
Fairtrade & Certified Organic Coffee Farmers in Magdalena, Colombia
In the north of Colombia, on the Sierra Nevada, we find COOCAFE, our coffee partner. They are a coffee cooperative with 59 members who have been growing coffee under the shade of avocado and mango trees since 2008. COOCAFE has been certified Organic (ORG) since 2014 and Fair Trade (FLO) since 2015. We buy the coffee directly from this cooperative.
We pay a fair price for the coffee. Our farmers even receive 33% of the price per kilo. We think this is fair because they bear most of the entrepreneurial risk of the entire coffee value chain. We also invest €2 per kilo in projects to improve the quality of life of our farmers and their families in a sustainable way. For every 5,000 kilos we sell, we can collect €10,000 to invest in them.
Packed in your own jar
Another point that we find important at Arwac Coffee is the prevention of waste. We want the consumer to bring her/his own pot of coffee to our office. We can then serve coffee beans. This means that packaging is not necessary and we prevent material waste. That’s good for the environment, and it feels good!
